Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40 days of Lent, a time of preparing our hearts and minds for Easter. Lent is often a time when we think about how we are deep inside…what spiritual ‘junk’ have we shoved away in the closets of our soul? What are some things that we should change in our lives either by subtracting or even adding things? Often people will ‘give up something’ or even fast (give up food) every Friday of Lent.
These next 40 days of Lent, Trinity UMC invites you to hear the words of Isaiah 58. God doesn’t want us just to give up something for 40 days and go back to the way life was when it’s all over. That’s playing the game of religion. So what does God want?
God wants us to add goodness to our lives. Do we see hunger around us? Share food. Do we see injustice? Speak out. Do we see oppression? Stand up and do something about it. Do we know people are lonely? Visit them. These are the things God loves us to add to our lives. This is what Isaiah 58 tells us.
So for these 40 days, we invite you to try adding something good and beautiful to your life for 40 minutes every day. We’re calling it 40 for 40. It will make a difference in the world around you…and it will make a difference in you as well.
